I've had a Lane recliner couch and love seat since moving back into my home 10 years ago. I need the recliner because I'm so short that I can't sit down on either and be comfortable (and my legs stick straight out!). Praline never gave me a problem with the recliner the whole time she was around it (7 years) and would rest on the footrest of the couch all the time. When I got Truffle and Brulee, I was too afraid to raise the footrest because of the fear of either of the girls getting stuck under the couch or crushed by the metal frames. In fact, I didn't even try to raise the footrest until January this year (2 years later) because of the need to sleep on the couch for two months because of my shoulder surgery.

I was very careful when I raised the footrest the first time. Both of the girls came over and looked under, but didn't attempt to actually go under the couch, which surprised me. I actually got down on the floor on "all fours" to inspect their view and realized there was very little space under there. Now that I look at the space through this picture, I do see areas where curious kitties can get in.

I've been hoping Truffle or Brulee would eventually start resting on top of the footrest while I was sitting there because it was always so comforting when Angel Sweet Praline would do so. To my surprise, Sunday night Truffle jumped on the footrest and settled down for the evening with me. I was thrilled.
peaceful evening together on the footrest
I was still at home recuperating from the stomach bug Monday (yesterday). I heard a scratching noise on the carpet and I looked for Brulee because she likes to scratch in the corners of the room on the carpet. To my surprise she was laying on the back of the couch. I called for Truffle and when she didn't respond, I put down the footrest and stood up hunting for her. I even grabbed a treat bag and called her name and still no Truffle. I don't know what made me look down, but I saw some white fur coming out from the back of the couch. You won't see this in the picture below because I didn't dare waste time for a photo during this.

I called Truffle's name and she didn't respond. I even touched her fur and there was no "chirp" from her like usual. I became frantic! I started to lift the back of the couch to let her crawl out, but then thought better of it because she still didn't move and I was afraid when I turned it over, she would be crushed by the metal framework and moving parts. My only thought was to take the chance and lift the footrest again, hoping she wouldn't be injured or worse.
You can imagine how my heart was racing, tears were beginning to flow, and prayers went up to God. I carefully lifted the footrest and out Truffle came! You can imagine my relief. I immediately checked her to make sure she was okay. She didn't seem in any distress or pain and was moving great. In fact, a few minutes later, she and Brulee were racing up the cat tree! Thankfully, Truffle appears fine! It did teach me a very important lesson though. I can't get complacent or lazy around this one. I must always be aware of where she is. She has a knack for getting into places she shouldn't and getting trapped (previous posts on the closet, the front door, and now the couch). She's so darn fast! I think my heart is still pounding! My beautiful, but naughty, Truffle is still with us!
That was a very harrowing experience!
Truffle! I know you wanted your mama to be more energetic and move more, but this may not have been the best way to do it...
ReplyDeleteThis very thing happened to us last month with Precious!
ReplyDeleteWe're so glad everything worked out ok. Hope you're getting over the stomach bug and your harrowing experience.
((Hugs))
First, we are glad we dont have that complexitory furniture here. Second, we are glad no one was injured. Third, we bet you gorgeous girls figure out the good safe places to sit around that chair!
ReplyDeleteThank goodness all is well. Did you hear about the cat that got stuck in a sofa for 5 days? http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-essex-26864309
ReplyDeleteGlad y'all were ok!
ReplyDeleteWe are so glad that Truffle is okay! My human can only imagine how freaked out you must have been. My human has always wanted a recliner, but she's never gotten one because she has a habit of having troublemaking cats in her life! We all get into things my human deems inappropriate.
ReplyDeleteHow scary.....we're glad Truffle is okay!! You must have been in a real panic!
ReplyDeleteThe Florida Furkids
What a scary experience! We're just glad that Truffle wasn't hurt.

How scary! You must have been absolutely frantic. Flynn has never tried to get under our recliners, and neither did Eric, but it is something I always worry about.
ReplyDeleteOMC, Truffle, Stop scaring your Mom like that! We don't have recliners or rockers because the head peep is afraid of that happening, and our only glider is outside, where we aren't allowed. After that story, we never will! We're glad Truffle is OK.
ReplyDeleteTruffles, what a stupid idea ! It's typically a kitten idea, not a lady cat idea ! Stop scaring your mom like this ! I'm glad you're OK ! Purrs, Zorro
ReplyDeleteOh, Paula! Your post nearly has me in tears!! I can so relate to how scary something like this is. It is abundantly clear how much you love your babies, and it just warms my heart so much to know there are people like me out there :)
ReplyDeleteI'm so very glad Truffle is okay!! Thank God she did not get hurt under there <3
Truffle! We know us cats like to do stuff to the humans, but seriously, you shouldn't scare Mom Paula like that! We're glad you're okay.
ReplyDeleteThe urge that makes cats squeeze into small spaces and give no hint of where they are when you call to them is very scary. Thank goodness Truffle wasn't hurt and if you can't find her at least you know one of her many hiding places.
ReplyDeleteLuv Hannah and Lucy xx xx
Mom Peggy can totally relate as to the panic Mom Paula was in! Angel Cerise was stuck inside our big recliner trying to get out through the back and thank cod Mom was there to pull her through. We are glad you are safe and sound, Truffle, and that your mom has lived through another day of your shenanigans.
ReplyDeleteShe is such a little stinker giving you a fright like that!
ReplyDelete--Jasper
Glad she is okay. That would be scary.
ReplyDeleteTW doesn’t blame you. She would have been beside herself screaming and crying. She knows someone who crushed his ferret when he closed up the sofabed.
ReplyDeleteTruffle!!! Like mom Paula doesn't have enough going on that you need to scare the bejezus out of her.....
ReplyDeletethat being said, mom says she is going to have to buy something and fix the bottom of our sofa since some cat ripped the bottom off and we can now get up in the couch :)
Very scary. Glad you both are OK
ReplyDeleteI was in suspense the whole time and could feel your anxiety! So glad she's free without injury. Phew! That little rascal! ~Rascal and Rocco
ReplyDeleteOh my what a fright you had. Thank goodness she was fine. I suspect she just scrunched up waiting for you to let her out. Little tinker gave you a real scare.
ReplyDeleteYIKES!!! Mommy would have been in a PANIC. Could Truffle wear a bell?
ReplyDeleteI had the EXACT same thing happen with my Angel Bobo. We had a couch with a recliner on both sides.....(same concept)....he ended up inside the couch and in the back part........I nearly died but he was fine!!! Thank goodness she is ok!
ReplyDeleteTruffle, don't scare your mum. I, Ducky, have been under our recliner too, but can squeeze out the back flap!
ReplyDeleteWow! What a scary story! We're so glad she is safe! Ohh...it gives me the shutters...
ReplyDelete~LisaCo9T
My Admiral did that but I knew she was there. She was trying to dodge me and the PTU!!
ReplyDeleteQuill loves to sleep under the flip part of the recliner. He knows the sound it makes so I always stop mid way so he has time to get out.
ReplyDeleteThat must have been a scary few moments. And we bet when you raised that footrest, Truffle moseyed out without a care in the world.
ReplyDelete"Hey, Mom. Why the crying??"
So happy she is okay. When we had a recliner, various kitties would crawl inside of it. Luckily no one was ever hurt. XO, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo
ReplyDeleteTruffle, we don't need more "angels" so please try to be careful!! xxoo Uncle Bhu
ReplyDeleteI had a few times when I had to climb out of a recliner sideways when a cat got under.
ReplyDeleteMaybe you could jam an extra pillow or two into the gaps under the footrest to block the gaps when extended, then pull them out when collapsing it.
