Brulee wants to know where the food is for her new bowl. |
Have you ever heard of whisker fatigue? We'd never heard about it until a few months ago and now Mom Paula knows why Brulee was hesitant to eat out of the traditional cat food bowls. Most traditional cat bowls are deep, which require us to put our faces down into it and our whiskers are forced into close contact with the sides of the bowls. When our whiskers feel the pressure inside the bowls, it can be painful for us. When we experience this pain, we don't always finish our food. Brulee has a flatter face (although, not extreme) which means her face has to be pressed in the bowl in order to eat. Many times in the past, she would begin eating and then stop and walk away. Mom Paula thought it was because she didn't like the food.

Dr. Catsby's bowl allows Brulee to eat whisker stress free |
There is a new bowl to help prevent whisker stress when cats eat. It's the Dr. Catsby™ Bowl for Whisker Relief. The bowls are made of a stainless steel finish and are wide and shallow. The design of the bowl allows easy access to our food without causing our whiskers to be pulled back, causing discomfort. The wide and shallow eating surface allows the food to fall to the center of the bowl, but still provides enough of an edge to prevent food from being pushed out of the bowl (Brulee does this all the time). The stainless steel finish help protect against wash-proof bacteria and is dishwasher safe and includes a cutaway in the side for easy lifting from the rubber mat. The bowl is placed on a rubber mat, which keeps it from moving around when we eat from it.

Does your cat exhibit signs of whisker Stress? Does she
- leave food in the bowl, but is still begging you for food?
- pull food out of the bowl with her mouth or paw to eat off the floor?
- leave a mess behind on the floor?
- only eat from the center of the bowl?
- act aggressive towards other animals in the house during mealtime?
- stand by the bowl before eating for a period of time, pacing around the bowl, or being hesitant to eat, though hungry?

Truffle enjoying the Dr. Catsby's Bowl for Whisker Relief |
Both Truffle and Brulee loved eating from the Dr. Catsby's bowl. In fact, Brulee has eaten almost every bit of her food and isn't making a mess on the floor. She appears more comfortable eating close to Truffle, which makes mealtime much less stressful. The bowl retails for $19.99, which isn't a bad price, considering the stainless steel bowl is resilient to bacteria, easy to clean, and raised high enough off the floor to make eating a little healthier for your cat.

Whisker stress sounds so awful. We are so glad this is being recognized and products made to help with it. All of us kittehz eat off of plates - sure, it's messy, but we like it better.
ReplyDeleteThis bowl is great, but especially perfect for you Persian girls!
ReplyDeleteThose bowls are awesome for whisker stress, and they're so practical, too. We love how the nonskid bottom comes off for cleaning.
ReplyDeleteFinally someone has come up with a great design for us and our whiskers!
ReplyDeleteMy cats currently use either a glass or ceramic traditional cat dish. My male cat has been exhibiting all the signs listed for whisker fatigue, but I am only now learning about this condition.
ReplyDeleteGreat dish, we have one so we will skip the giveaway so someone else can get a turn.
ReplyDeleteMy cats pretty much eat from basic bowls, although I did get a lower, wider bowl (it looks like a cat face) for my Moko and it seems to be helping. Our Arata has a deep bowl, and I'm sure he'd love to have a bowl that didn't stress his whiskers, too.
ReplyDeleteWe LOVE our Dr. Catsby's bowl! This was a great review, girls.
ReplyDeleteThat looks like a very nice bowl.
ReplyDeleteAll I did I'd go to the humanity stores, and buy a .50 cent old Pyrex lid. It's shallow and holds enough and it's also great for water.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea. Zoe is a messy eater, but we're not sure it is whisker fatigue. Could be!
ReplyDeleteWhat awesome bowls! I never heard of whisker fatigue before! Learned something new! Our rehabilitated feral, now adopted kitty Binx has raised stainless steel bowls.
ReplyDeleteGreat looking bowl.My boys eat from traditional food bowls. I just got a fountain water bowl for the boys. I guess the low profile bowls are next. Thanks for the awesome giveaway.
ReplyDeleteThose are pawsome bowls. Mom gave us regular flat dinner plates and we use those instead of bowls.
ReplyDeletemy guys just eat from a plain stainless steel bowl. this looks like a great product.
ReplyDeleteWe have ordinary dishes but we would love this!
ReplyDeleteMy cats eat from stainless steel bowls but they are deeper than this bowl. This bowl is really a great idea and I'm surprised that it hasn't been available sooner. I can see where the cats would really appreciate it!
ReplyDeleteI have ceramic shallow bowls from which my kitties eat, but I would love for them to have stainless steel ones.
ReplyDeleteI eat from a plate now!
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of whisker stress. It seems like a very important piece of cat ownership that isn't discussed as much as it should. Currently, the family cat's food bowl is an automatic dispenser, but that also means the bowl is pretty deep.
ReplyDeletei have 3 gals, one eats from a low cut dish w/ rubber to keep it from moving, one eats from a slow eater and the other eats from a small ceramic pet bowl, i like the low bowls b/c it keeps things from getting in their whiskers
ReplyDeleteMy cats haven't have whisker issues, but these bowls still look great! I do feed our kitties in flatter bowls anyway, just in case!
ReplyDeleteI use a wide bowl, but not this wide! :)
ReplyDeleteI have to tell you that I learn so much about cats thanks to your blog.I never knew this was an issue. I am tweeting it out, too ;)
