Truffle's Visit to the Vet

We went back to the vet today for a followup on Truffle's eye and for her annual checkup.

I cannot stress enough how important it is to get your cat to the vet if you notice something that isn't quite right. Both Truffle and Brulee tend to have runny eyes because of their flatter faces and some allergies, but it was obvious there was a problem with Truffle's eye last week. I hate to think what could have happened to her eye had I not taken her to the vet immediately. I'm thankful I have the Sleepypod® carriers to make it a little easier to transport them.  I'll talk more about getting your cats to the vet next week on Take Your Cat to the Vet Day.

Truffle's temperature was normal and she weighed in at 8 lb. I still believe a lot of that is fur because she is a petite little Persian. Dr. Strom stained her eye with the Eye Fluorescein Stain and looked at it with a black light. There was no evidence of the scratch or ulcer! We talked about using regular eye lubricating drops, such as Refresh, on both girls to help with their allergies and draining eyes. Dr. Strom says they also use a saline solution to clean the eyes.

It was time for Truffle's annual checkup, so there were additional tests, vaccinations, and examinations to do. South Carolina requires a rabies shot, so the girls get them on an annual basis. It was also time for Truffle's FVRCP 3-year booster. I always talk to the vets about any shots because of Truffle's litter mate, Beignet (sarcoma at 11 weeks old). We monitor the girls carefully after any vaccination. Truffle also had blood drawn and those results will be back in a couple of days. Dr. Strom couldn't get a urine sample because Truffle's bladder was empty.  I need to take a stool sample back within a couple of weeks to meet the agreement of our Wellness Plan.

Truffle took refuge under the chairs while Brulee was having her nails clipped

Our Wellness Plan also includes nail trimming and our monthly treatment of Revolution®. Truffle decided she preferred sitting under the chairs while  Brulee was getting her nails trimmed.  Both received their flea/tick/heartworm treatment for the month.  Dr. Strom checked both of the girls' teeth (even though the appointment was for Truffle and said basically they looked good but there was a little tarter buildup beginning on the back molars. Now that the girls are 6-years old and they are on a wellness plan, they will get a checkup every six months.  I also have a pet insurance plan from Trupanion® on both girls and I've already received 80% of the charges from last week back in the mail today.  I did apply for a Care Credit card last year and that helps me pay expenses up front and then reimburse it when I get the payment from Trupanion.

I'll talk more about taking your cat(s) to the vet next week but I can't stress enough the importance of regular wellness visits and trips for illness or injury as quickly as possible. I've had to sacrifice for myself in order to take care of the girls, but they depend on me.

Thank you Dr. Strom and the staff from Cherokee Trail Veterinary Clinic for being the best with my girls.

  2. You and I and many others know that dependency of our babies on us to take care of them and we have made a promise to do so. And we love them.

    1. Thank you. Brulee is a little hissy with Truffle even though both went to the vet. I think it's the alcohol they used to draw blood.

  8. So glad Truffle. I'm intrigued by the Sleepypod. My cats hate getting into our carrier, is it hard to get them in the Sleepypod?

    1. Not really. I keep the Sleepypod out in the living room all the time. There are two different ways to put your cat inside the carrier. I usually open the lid completely and zip it closed once they are inside (making sure I don't get any whiskers or fur.

Truffle's eyes are lovely and we bet she is relieved too :)

  14. I keep getting tempted to try a Sleeypod for one of my dogs as a car seat, but I'm not sure how well he'd fit/like it. He's only 11 lbs, but has long legs so is tall. In the past he really hasn't liked carriers that he can't fully stand up in. I dunno. I'm afraid I'll spend the money to get one and he'll hate it, but I love that they are actually crash tested. I might have to email the company at some point and see what they recommend. Annnnyways, I'm so glad the checkup went well! I always feel so releaved when vet visits are over, especially when my pups get a clean bill of health.

  17. I'm glad to hear Truffle is doing better! Do you find that you're taking them in more now that they are older? You said you take them both in every six months now, was it just yearly before?

  18. It really is so important to ensure cats get checked out by a Veterinarian every year, and more often if they are senior cats. I'm so glad Truffle's eye is better!

  19. Great post! So many cat owners do not have regular check ups and it is such a shame. Cats that are seen regularly and desensitized have much better lives.

  20. So glad that Truffle is OK! Does the sleepypod come in bigger sizes? Might be good for Babu too since we are thinking of getting him on flights with us.

  21. Truffle is such a beautiful cat! And her eyes are so stunning. I agree with you, we must drop everything and take our pets to the doctor when they are hurt, or just for preventative care. Truffle is lucky to have you as her owner.

  24. So glad everything went well! I love seeing the promotion of vet visits for cats. Too often I hear people say that they don't think their cat needs the same vet treatment as other pets : /

  25. We have a kitty who was rescued and her eyes were closed shut with so much puss when she was found! Her eyes are now cross eyed and she always gets gunk and crusties in her eyes no matter what we do. AND she has been seen at the vet numerous times to get it looked at. As long as it's not bothering her I'm ok with how she is.

  26. I am so happy all went well and Layla goes twice a year for a check up now she is getting older, it all covered by PAWS and when there normally gets her nails trimmed also.

  27. Happy to hear Truffle's eye is alright . It's always a worry when there is something wrong with our pets, but so important to not wait and get all our pets into the vet for healthy check ups.

  28. I'm glad that Truffle checked out okay! You take such great care of Truffle and Brulee, but don't sacrifice yourself, after all, they depend on you to take care of yourself too!

  29. Truffle looks stunning in her after photo. Thank goodness you took her to the vet and she is OK. I need to take Kilo the Pug for his annual but he hates going so it is such a production. Love the Sleepy Pods.

  30. I’m glad she is doing better! I am thinking of grabbing one of those pods for my Mom’s cat! They look so easy, and right now she has to battle her into a plastic crate that she hates!
