Communicate Your Needs

Humans can communicate verbally to let us know what they need (although sometimes we wish they didn't). Ahem... Back to the point of this post, humans can tell you what they want or need. We cats have to demonstrate our wants and needs through body language or our distinct meows.

Cats communicate in a variety of ways and the challenge is for the humans to try and understand this communication in order to provide the comfort, care, attention, and love they need. Cats don't have as much facial expression as dogs because of relatively immobile and flat faces, so humans need to watch other signals to determine what is needed.

Tail Communication

Tail position is usually a great means of communication

We've see a lot of information in books and on the Internet about how a human can determine a cat's mood through the position of the tail. Usually, when a cat has the "tail up" position where the tail is held vertically in the air perpendicular to the ground, the cat is signaling a friendly posture. If a cat is approaching another cat, animal, or human with her tail in this position, she is usually open to the encounter.  Truffle loves to hold her beautiful tail high in the air when someone is calling her for a treat or if she likes the person in the room. Brulee doesn't hold her tail high in this position for some reason. Her tail is extremely long and she usually drags it behind her or wraps it around her. We have some cute photos of her as a kitten with her tail held high, but it's rare to see it now. There are other tail positions that may indicate mood: tail held out slowly moving side to side can indicate aggression, a "poofed out" tail can show aggression or a defensive mood when something (or someone scares them), and a tail tucked between the back legs may show nervousness and/or submission.

Facial Expressions

We've already stated that cats don't have a lot of facial expressions although Mom Paula will tell you that we definitely show our personality through our facial expressions. Visual signals can be shown through alterations in the position or movement of the eyes, ears, and mouth. An angry cat will usually have erect ears that are held rotated out along with narrow pupils and may arch its back. A fearful cat may have dilated pupils and ears held down against the head and may be in a cringing position with her tail thumping on the ground. A relaxed cat usually has ears that face forward in a normal position.

It's said that eyes can be the windows to the soul and Mom Paula believes the same is true for cats. We talked about cats' eyes the other day, especially the wide open eyes of a Persian cat. Truffle and Brulee have perfected the "stare" especially when they want a treat. Some researchers believe that when a cat is staring with a little blinking represents a challenge. A cat is usually relaxed and contented when there is a combination of blinking and winking or half-closed eyes. We love the "blink kiss" that Jackson Galaxy talks about when a cat responds to a human's slow blink with a blink of their own.

Have you ever wished you could actually communicate with your pet and know what she was saying? Some people reach out to an animal communicator for this purpose. We've talked about our sessions with Coryelle Kramer and how much she's provided insight to help Mom Paula understand a situation with Sweet Praline, Truffle, or Brulee. You can read about our previous session with Coryelle here. 

The focus of our recent communication with Coryelle was Brulee. Brulee has the cutest little personality, but she can be pretty stubborn. She is still insisting on eating under the table in the dining room instead of the kitchen and basically told Coryelle that she feels more comfortable eating under the chair. Coryelle laughs when Brulee tells her this because Brulee is basically saying she isn't going to change this routine anytime soon. About a year ago, Brulee began going to a little section beside a chair in the living room that is surrounded by the window table, the chair, and the secretary. Brulee will go there and stare at Mom Paula. She doesn't seem stressed or afraid, but Mom Paula wanted to know why Brulee was doing this. According to Coryelle, Brulee said the energy in this place feels really good. We should mention that the secretary that borders this area contains the ashes of Sweet Praline and Beignet. 

Coryelle said Brulee is very interested in the way things are placed in the house. Mom Paula mentioned there was a lot of "stuff" in the house lately that has crowded things and Coryelle recommended moving things to make the environment more conducive and relaxed.  Mom Paula definitely agrees. Coryelle also said that Brulee was conducive to rest and connection which may be the reason she is most comfortable when Mom Paula is in the bed.  This is the only place Brulee will rest on Mom Paula's lap.

Coryelle said that Brulee may be most comfortable with Mom Paula when she's in the bed because that's the place Mom Paula is most open, receptive and her brain is quietening down. Brulee's second place she is most comfortable with cuddling is in the home office where Mom Paula is most creative and open. 

Towards the end of the conversation, Mom Paula asked Coryelle if Truffle had anything to say. She said Truffle was ready to talk. Truffle considers herself the office manager and monitors Mom Paula in that area. Truffle is also the alpha at home. Truffle insisted Coryelle tell Mom Paula that she (Truffle) was done with being sick and she was sorry she'd put such a worry on Mom Paula.
