Communicate Your Needs
Humans can communicate verbally to let us know what they need (although sometimes we wish they didn't). Ahem... Back to the point of this post, humans can tell you what they want or need. We cats have to demonstrate our wants and needs through body language or our distinct meows.
Cats communicate in a variety of ways and the challenge is for the humans to try and understand this communication in order to provide the comfort, care, attention, and love they need. Cats don't have as much facial expression as dogs because of relatively immobile and flat faces, so humans need to watch other signals to determine what is needed.

Tail position is usually a great means of communication |
We've see a lot of information in books and on the Internet about how a human can determine a cat's mood through the position of the tail. Usually, when a cat has the "tail up" position where the tail is held vertically in the air perpendicular to the ground, the cat is signaling a friendly posture. If a cat is approaching another cat, animal, or human with her tail in this position, she is usually open to the encounter. Truffle loves to hold her beautiful tail high in the air when someone is calling her for a treat or if she likes the person in the room. Brulee doesn't hold her tail high in this position for some reason. Her tail is extremely long and she usually drags it behind her or wraps it around her. We have some cute photos of her as a kitten with her tail held high, but it's rare to see it now. There are other tail positions that may indicate mood: tail held out slowly moving side to side can indicate aggression, a "poofed out" tail can show aggression or a defensive mood when something (or someone scares them), and a tail tucked between the back legs may show nervousness and/or submission.
Facial Expressions

Truffle relaxed with ears facing forward and half closed eyes |
We've already stated that cats don't have a lot of facial expressions although Mom Paula will tell you that we definitely show our personality through our facial expressions. Visual signals can be shown through alterations in the position or movement of the eyes, ears, and mouth. An angry cat will usually have erect ears that are held rotated out along with narrow pupils and may arch its back. A fearful cat may have dilated pupils and ears held down against the head and may be in a cringing position with her tail thumping on the ground. A relaxed cat usually has ears that face forward in a normal position.
Eye Contact

Brulee and Truffle have perfected the "stare" |
It's said that eyes can be the windows to the soul and Mom Paula believes the same is true for cats. We talked about cats' eyes the other day, especially the wide open eyes of a Persian cat. Truffle and Brulee have perfected the "stare" especially when they want a treat. Some researchers believe that when a cat is staring with a little blinking represents a challenge. A cat is usually relaxed and contented when there is a combination of blinking and winking or half-closed eyes. We love the "blink kiss" that Jackson Galaxy talks about when a cat responds to a human's slow blink with a blink of their own.
Animal Communicator - Coryelle Kramer

Truffle communicating with Grandma Faye |
Have you ever wished you could actually communicate with your pet and know what she was saying? Some people reach out to an animal communicator for this purpose. We've talked about our sessions with Coryelle Kramer and how much she's provided insight to help Mom Paula understand a situation with Sweet Praline, Truffle, or Brulee. You can read about our previous session with Coryelle here.
The focus of our recent communication with Coryelle was Brulee. Brulee has the cutest little personality, but she can be pretty stubborn. She is still insisting on eating under the table in the dining room instead of the kitchen and basically told Coryelle that she feels more comfortable eating under the chair. Coryelle laughs when Brulee tells her this because Brulee is basically saying she isn't going to change this routine anytime soon. About a year ago, Brulee began going to a little section beside a chair in the living room that is surrounded by the window table, the chair, and the secretary. Brulee will go there and stare at Mom Paula. She doesn't seem stressed or afraid, but Mom Paula wanted to know why Brulee was doing this. According to Coryelle, Brulee said the energy in this place feels really good. We should mention that the secretary that borders this area contains the ashes of Sweet Praline and Beignet.
Coryelle said Brulee is very interested in the way things are placed in the house. Mom Paula mentioned there was a lot of "stuff" in the house lately that has crowded things and Coryelle recommended moving things to make the environment more conducive and relaxed. Mom Paula definitely agrees. Coryelle also said that Brulee was conducive to rest and connection which may be the reason she is most comfortable when Mom Paula is in the bed. This is the only place Brulee will rest on Mom Paula's lap.

Brulee in her little corner, staring at Mom Paula |
Coryelle said that Brulee may be most comfortable with Mom Paula when she's in the bed because that's the place Mom Paula is most open, receptive and her brain is quietening down. Brulee's second place she is most comfortable with cuddling is in the home office where Mom Paula is most creative and open.
Towards the end of the conversation, Mom Paula asked Coryelle if Truffle had anything to say. She said Truffle was ready to talk. Truffle considers herself the office manager and monitors Mom Paula in that area. Truffle is also the alpha at home. Truffle insisted Coryelle tell Mom Paula that she (Truffle) was done with being sick and she was sorry she'd put such a worry on Mom Paula.
If you are interested in communicating with Coryelle Kramer, you can contact her using the template on her website. This fall, Coryelle is hosting a live video series, The Animal Experience, on Facebook on Thursdays at 3:00 pm ET. You can follow Coryelle on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and Pinterest.
We truly enjoy communicating with Coryelle and she provides some insight to help Mom Paula make our lives comfortable, safe, and happy.

We do most of OUR comunications by meowing in various ways. Mostly, we have taught him "food".
ReplyDeleteI would love to be able to afford a communicator for my three. I want to know why Angel and Max do not get along! I would also like to know why the boys chase her and why Max sprays! WOW! We have more problems that I thought we did.
ReplyDeleteMy human always wonders if there is anything she could do to make my therapy visits even better for me! Although I think she already does a pretty good job (except sometimes I wish she would let me walk more on the leash).
ReplyDeleteHmm... I'm beginning to wonder if she really needs to ask about that at all! Maybe she could ask about Binga instead, and how senile she really is. (Ducking and running!)
That's a great giveaway, someone will be very happy to win one of the sessions.
ReplyDeleteWe just LOVE LOVE LOVE Coryelle! We've meowed with her three times already and it really helped us all a lot. I told her I'm ready to be healed completely and I'm going to work hard with Mommy on this. Lexy told her that when she meows at Mommy she's singing a song to her! (She likes to make Mommy smile.) We both asked for more treats. MOL
ReplyDeleteThis is your best giveaway yet, although they are all great. I would love to know what Emmy is thinking and if she is content in her new home with us.
ReplyDeleteWe want to know so many things--maybe what is it that we can do to make Gemini and Ham get a long better?
ReplyDeleteI would ask my cat Tilly why she is so mean to our dog.
ReplyDeleteI've tried an animal communicator three times with Chester and Gretel. Twice was with the same woman and it was in person. Once was over the phone (with Emmy S.). I feel whether a person believes people can talk to animals or not, the feedback can give pet owners a different perspective - a different way to look at a problem or situation - that can strengthen their bond or change things for the positive. That's what happened with me anyway.
ReplyDeleteMeowry Catmas Truffle and Brulee,
ReplyDeleteWe had the female human read this article. Although we have to say, she is pretty good at body language, facial expressions, etc with all five of us, we'd love to be able to "tell" her exactly what we're thinking.
Purs & Head Bonks,
Tucker & The Tribe of Five
I'd like to ask why Mr. N barks when we leave and if there's something we can do for his separation anxiety. And about his dog reactivity as well.
ReplyDeleteGreat article! Mom says she would love to know if Chanel likes going out and wants to continue....and what's up with the biting.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great giveaway! Cats can be very confusing - but we love them even more for being so complex. That's really interesting the reads you got - and pretty amazing that they were right on!
ReplyDeleteI would want to know how my cats really feel, both physically and mentally.
ReplyDeleteAh, Cookie is a great communicator and always makes sure she gets her point across. The only time things get frustrating is when dog language isn't specific enough. Such as - my leg hurts ... but where exactly? The knee? The hip? Sometimes a bit of English would be good ;-)
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad that you shared this information. Especially since the way cats and dogs communicate is very different, so understanding the differences between the two is really important.
ReplyDeleteI would love to know what my cats and dog feel about everything. Are they happy, healthy, etc. It would make me feel so much better knowing exactly what they need from me!
ReplyDeleteI've never worked with an animal communicator, so this article was really fascinating to me. Brulee's need to eat in an area with good energy may mean that she's attuned to the feng shui of the room.
ReplyDeleteOh we so hope we win, we used her when Arty Mouse went missing. Love Love Coryelle and we always have questions (Mom) and answers (us cats and dogs). Mom wants to know why Tuiren doesn't want to sleep in the house and why Chimera won't eat with Yang (she waits till he finishes then she goes to eat). And why Chimera scratches at everything, she scratches at the door to get people to open it, she scratches after she finishes eating in a vain attempt to cover her food up and she well she sort scratches for everything. And we would love to know why YIN HATES the Vet. So lots of questions here.
ReplyDeleteI would ask why Kitty the Feral Farm cat doesn't want to come inside.
ReplyDeleteLots of eye contact. Lots of "grunts" with different meanings. Trained the humans well so that they understand.
ReplyDeleteLooks like Coryelle really knows how to get in touch with your kitties. What an awesome talent.
ReplyDelete—Purrs (and wags) from Life with Dogs and Cats
This photo is simply adorable. Love those little black kitty lips!
ReplyDeleteJean from Welcome to the Menagerie
This is such an interesting post, and I'm thrilled that you have a giveaway! I'm definitely going to enter because Icy has developed a bad habit that we don't understand. It's a very demanding kind of bark/growl/howl and seems to be getting worse. I'd love to know why she's doing that. It's so fascinating that Brulee likes the spot close to where the ashes of Sweet Praline and Beignet, and that Truffle feels badly that her illness cause you pain. I got chills reading those two things!
ReplyDeleteLove & Biscuits,
Dogs Luv Us and We Luv Them
Coryelle is such a pretty and unique name. It's wonderful that she is using her skill to help others understand their pets. I would like to know why Gusto is doing a couple of things now and then that have me a bit puzzled.
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome
ReplyDeleteSweet alpha Truffle! I love the picture of you relaxing with your ears forward. And I'm glad that you decided to communicate such a kind message to Coryelle. I'm sure Mom Paula is relieved to hear your news!
ReplyDeleteI'd really like to know more about my sister's cats, one really doesn't seem to like the other one, I'd be curious to know why.
ReplyDeleteAs a dog person, you've given me a new appreciation for felines! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting look into the things to look for to understand cat behavior!
ReplyDeleteI would love to have Coryelle communicate with my dog and 2 of my cats. I need her to tell Dylan to calm down so he doesn't continue to reinjure his already injured right knee. I need to find out if Emily is feeling any better and ask Oscar how he is doing. I know Phoebe is fine, if a bit naughty.
ReplyDeleteBev319 posted the above.
DeleteI would love to know what my cats are thinking.
ReplyDeleteI'd want to know if there's anything else I can do to make Mudpie as happy as possible.
ReplyDeleteIt looks as if Coryelle can help just about any pet here and their humans! We would love to know if Chopin and Bridgie have sensed a presence in our old house and how they feel about living here. Won't they be surprised when I know what they're thinking.. :) ~ Julie
ReplyDeletethanks for the chance
