12 Days of Catmas - Petmate®

Engage in Mental Stimulation

There always seems to be more activity during the holiday season which can really wear us out! We do sleep a lot already (16-20 hours a day) but we can also get into mischief if we aren't kept mentally stimulated through appropriate play.

Mom Paula wasn't ready for the challenges of keeping two cats entertained and appropriately stimulated. She had Sweet Praline for 15 1/2 years and Praline was a stereotypical Persian cat; she laid around most of the day looking beautiful. Mom Paula would pull out a wand toy or give Praline some catnip and Praline just looked at her as if to say, "You expect me to play with that!" All of that changed when Brulee and Truffle came to live with Mom Paula!

Brulee and Truffle playing with the silk plant (2011)

Brulee and Truffle were into everything from Day 1. Truffle is the most mischievous, but both girls can be a challenge at times. They played with each other a lot when they were kittens, but Truffle usually tended to be the aggressor. As the girls have grown into beautiful adult Persians, their mental stimulation needs are different. Truffle can entertain herself with a catnip toy while Brulee prefers interactive toys. Mom Paula thought she knew a lot about cat behavior until she had two cats and soon realized she had a lot more to learn.

A couple of years ago, we began watching Jackson Galaxy on My Cat From Hell on Animal Planet. Mom Paula soon realized when Truffle was a little more aggressive than Brulee wanted, it meant that Truffle needed additional stimulation through play. Jackson says that "cats who play are naturally more confident in their territorial ownership" which means they are happier and better behaved. Mom Paula has learned to pull out a wand toy or the laser pointed to redirect Truffle's play and found it was amazing the difference it made.

Jackson Galaxy™ Collection by Petmate®

Jackson Galaxy has worked with Petmate® to design the Jackson Galaxy™ Collection of cat products. These products tap directly into a cat's natural instincts to bring out the best in them. The goal of the Jackson Galaxy line is to provide products and information on their webpage and through their products to help individuals enjoy every moment with their cats.

Butterfly Ball

Brulee and Truffle watch the Butterfly Ball to try and capture the fluttering butterfly

We were so excited to see the Jackson Galaxy® Butterfly Ball was now available from Petmate. Mom Paula saw this product when she interviewed Jackson Galaxy at Global Pet Expo last Spring. The Butterfly Ball is a mentally stimulating toy that can provide your cat with visual stimulation that is similar to the outdoor. This toy requires batteries and once it's turned on, there is sensor-activated action that sets the butterfly fluttering within the ball. This playful sphere taps into our natural instincts to observe and track play. The butterfly is so realistic! The ball has a weighted base provides a fun wobble while keeping the butterfly upright.

At first, Truffle and Brulee sat and stared at the Butterfly Ball. After several minutes, Truffle wasn't as interested and went off to the side. Brulee continued to watch the fluttering butterfly and eventually went into playful mode. The video above show Brulee trying to get the butterfly.  Mom Paula made sure to reward Brulee with a treat to satisfy the "capture" need of cats.

Gravity Tower

Truffle and Brulee with the Jackson Galaxy™ Gravity Tower from Petmate®

The second new toy we received from Petmate was the Jackson Galaxy® Gravity Tower. This toy is a bouncy, tipsy, topsy, turvy, spinning magical magnetic cat toy. There are three different levels of textured items that can engage your cat to explore. The toy is designed with unique repelling magnets that bounces as your cat bats at the different textured toys. The base is weighted which keeps it upright and allows it to spin 360 degrees. This toy does not require batteries. It's designed to activate our natural prey instinct to pounce and play.

Both Truffle and Brulee were attracted to this toy. Truffle was interested in the lower level with the more traditional-type cat toys and enjoyed the spinning motion. Brulee was drawn to the straw-like material on the middle and top level. This toy provide a lot more interactive play for the girls and gave them the satisfaction of "capture" while playing.

  7. Since I have 2 cats, they kind of play off each other and mentally stimulate and entertain one another. Though, I play with them on their cat tower and with all their toys. They're just toy junkies though and would go crazy over either of these toys. Thanks for the chance!

  10. I have 3 cats and our third we just brought home about a month ago. He's still a kitten so he gets a variety of mental stimulation with pretty much anything and everyone who will play with him. My other cats are 3 and almost 10 years old. I have recently purchased a couple of different toys from the Jackson Galaxy collection to get my oldest moving more and I'm working on getting all 3 of them to get along by using a lot of his tips and advice from his show which has been very helpful.

  12. We have TONS of cat toys, including tunnels, wand toys, catnip toys, and many others. However, they don't have anything like this and I like that they can play with it without me, too. I do actually have things to do other than entertain our three cats. LOL!
