12 Days of Catmas - Petsafe®

Drink Plenty of Water

It's the holiday season and that usually means eating a lot of food you shouldn't eat and drinking different types of beverages. Experts tell us that humans should make sure to stay hydrated with water during the holiday season to stay fresh and healthy. It's also important to keep your pets hydrated during the holidays and Winter months.

We've talked about the importance of keeping pets hydrated during the hot days of summer, but we've never really addressed keeping hydrated year-round, especially during the Winter months. We're lucky we don't have a lot of really cold weather in the South, but once the heater is turned on, the air tends to get dry in the home. We've noticed our cool mist humidifier is using more water each day and our water bowls tend to evaporate more quickly. We're sure many of your humans skin become very dry during the winter months, so it's possible our skin also gets dry from the heat in the home, especially since 80% of a cat's body is made up of water compared to 55-60% in a human.

Pets need to drink ounce of water per pound of body weight each day. It's important that we get proper hydration each day to maintain our health and avoid additional trips to the vet. Getting proper hydration can help prevent urinary tract infections and urinary disease, aid with energy levels and temperature regulation, and speed recovery time from sickness or surgery. Cats are notorious for not drinking enough water, so it's important to find ways to encourage your cats to drink clean and fresh water. Even though we believe cats tend to not like water, they are magically attracted to running water. Many of you probably have cats who love to drink from the faucet. Sweet Praline used to run to the sink when Mom Paula would turn on the water.

Truffle presenting the new Drinkwell® Seascape Fountain from PetSafe®

One way we've found to ensure we have clean and fresh water is to use a pet fountain. We love the Drinkwell® fountains from PetSafe® Brands and have a couple of varieties located in our home. PetSafe Brand pet fountains encourage pets to drink more water and offer a stylish alternative to traditional pet bowls. Mom Paula loves the calming effect of the running water in the fountains. Pet fountains help keep us healthy and hydrated by providing fresh, filtered, circulating water. Petsafe recently released a new fountain this year: The Drinkwell® Seascape Fountain. The Seascape Fountain provides 70 ounces of fresh, filtered water in a stylish design. It has a low-voltage submersible pump that constantly circulates the water, keeping it clean and appealing to our pets. The water in this fountain "flows" over the dome instead of providing a stream. This fountain is extremely quiet, which makes it more approachable for those cats who may be frightened by the sound of a stream of water. The capacity of the fountain makes it ideal for small to medium sized pets. It's a ceramic design, which makes it hygienic and it's top-shelf dishwasher safe. There is dual filtration that includes activated carbon to remove odors and open-cell foam to capture hair and debris.

The short video above shows you how quiet the fountain is and the motion of the water. It took Truffle and Brulee a little while to get use to the different type of fountain because most of their fountains have a stream of water flowing. The design of the water flow is very similar to the Drinkwell® Sedona Fountain we've reviewed in the past. These fountains are so quiet that Mom Paula has them in the bedroom.

  1. If I know I'm going to be away from home for long periods of time then I usually will leave multiple bowls of water down for my 3 cats. I have been wanting to get a fountain for them since they like to drink from the faucet too.

  7. I'm constantly cleaning out and refilling water dishes at our house. With three dogs and three cats (all rescues), and the dogs and cats do sometimes drink from the same dishes. I'd love to win this fountain - I could put it up off the floor for the cats, without the dogs using it. That way my cats would always have fresh, clean, slobber-free water to drink!

  10. I have been adding water to my cat's wet food ever since he was a kitten. He has never been much of a drinker so I just add water and mix it with his food. He's used to it and eats with no issues.

  17. There is allus a fresh bowl of water next to our foodbowls, but Im the only one TBT sees who normally drinks from it. Marley and Ayla seem to prefer the small pond and maybe drinking inside while TBT is asleep. In Winter, when we dont go out so often (or the pond is froze) he adds 2 more bowls inside at different places to encourage us to drink. The massive peepods in the litter boxes prove to him that we are getting plenty of water. ~ IZA

  18. We have a glass bowl in the kitchen for both cats. I'm constantly filling it due to the 2 year old cat constantly spilling it, on purpose. Not sure if she wants moving water or not. But, ive been curious about a fountain for them and this one looks rather neat!

  19. Ooh, I don't have a water fountain. Mom has been thinking about getting me one. I think I'd like this one you show very much! I think Mom would have to keep it up on the counter so the doggie wouldn't slobber in it before I got to use it, though! Hugs & cuddles beauties! -Valentine (& Mom) of Noir Kitty Mews
