Truffle listening to the phone conversation with Dr. Boyette |
What are Struvite Stones?
Struvite Stones are crystal-like formations that are usually small in size and primarily made up of magnesium, ammonium, and phosphate. Struvite Stones can be found in the urinary bladder, the kidneys, or the urethra. If found early enough, some Struvite Stones can be flushed out or dissolved, but like in Truffle's case, they had to be removed surgically.
Truffle goes back to the vet on Monday for a followup from her surgery. We'll discuss her future diet and treatment at that time and will share more about Struvite Stones in cats over the next few weeks.
Thankful to hear she has something treatable. I never knew females could get this as well. Give her a scratch behind the ear and hoping to hear more good news!

I hope Truffle has recovered from her surgery and is back to her old self. I'll be interested to hear what special diet your vet recommends and whether or not it is designed to prevent further stones from forming.
ReplyDeleteOh, my goodness! Looks at those front paws!!
ReplyDeleteI know so little about this topic - so I look forward to learning more.
I hope there is a food she likes that will prevent these.
ReplyDeleteThat is such a sweet picture of Truffles :)
ReplyDeleteWE purr that a diet she likes will help prevent more stones from forming!

I hope she recovers from the surgery well. How is she doing? Are they preventable with diet?
ReplyDeleteWell now you know and we hope treatment goes well..
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness poor Truffle those stones must be very painful. I hope she feels better and that diet change works for her.
ReplyDeleteAwww poor Truffles and hopefully you will find a solution to a healthy life for her. My friends dog suffers from stones and he is on a homeopathic diet which seems to be working
ReplyDeleteHope ya can find a way to prevent them from coming back.
ReplyDeleteI really likes your blog! You have shared the whole concept really well and very beautifully soulful read! Thanks for sharing.

Please keep us posted! I really hope that the approach for these is something that works well for Truffle. I know how picky she is about the med-type foods. (And I don't blame her!)
ReplyDeleteI hope Truffle does well on her new diet. I can't remember what kind of stones Darya had, but she ate prescription dry food for several years and did fine. :)
ReplyDeleteWe're all sending purrs for an excellent follow-up visit for that sweetie.
ReplyDeleteWow! I've never heard of Struvite stones before. It'll be interesting to read your upcoming posts. Makes me think it may be tied somehow to diet? Will be following along. So glad Truffle is improving and has something that is treatable. Hang in there!
ReplyDeleteWe're glad you all know what it is now, and that there is a way to treat those Struvite stones. Sending lots of purrs and prayers!
ReplyDeleteAlthough I've never heard of Struvite stones before, I am glad she has a diagnosis. Hopefully, the treatment will just require a simple change in diet.
ReplyDeletePoor baby. I think that well-selected diet should help to tackle the issue. Aren't struvite crystals commonly associated with a UTI? Either way, I hope you get all this well under control.
ReplyDeleteThe vet originally told me that the stones and crystals were two different things. I am going to ask about this tomorrow at our follow-up visit.
DeleteI checked with the vet today and he said that struvite crystals/stones are associated with a UTI in dogs, but not cats.
DeletePoor Truffle! She's been through a lot, and so have you worrying about her. I hope you find a good diet that can prevent her from ever going through this again. Love & Kisses to Truffle!

Oh no poor Truffle! I've never heard of struvite stones but I am glad it is very treatable. I hope Truffle feels better soon! Sending lots of love!
ReplyDeleteOh Truffle is going to really take advantage of you now that she has your full attention...lol. So glad that you discovered what was wrong and that she is on the road to recovery.
ReplyDeleteCanned food is very very important for preventing the formation of these stones. You may also want to avoid anything with fish in it since it is known to contribute to struvite crystals and stones. Please keep us posted about Truffle.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad they figured out what the issue is and were able to remove them safely. I hope Truffle feels much better and that with diet changes you can prevent them from developing again! Keep us posted
ReplyDeleteSo happy for this news! Hope you continue to get healthy in time for summer. Missed seeing you guys at BlogPaws.
