Catmas Wishes - Feeding Finicky Felines

Anyone who's been owned by a feline knows how finicky cats can be at times. Some cats only like a certain flavor while others are only happy with a particular texture. Adding to this finickiness are cats with specific dietary requirements. What is a cat owner to do?

We believe if you look up the word "finicky" in the dictionary, you'll see a photo of a cat! We're sure most people who are owned by felines have experience with their feline companion turning up her nose at food she's given. Some experts believe finicky eaters are made (by humans), not born. Humans tend to try and please their fur children and sometimes create picky food critics.

Feline Nutritional Needs

Did you know that cats are neophobic? Neophobia is an extreme or irrational fear or dislike of anything new, novel, or unfamiliar. Cats do not like changes in their environment and they tend to not like changes in their food. Cat owners tend to try different products in order to keep their cats from becoming bored with food and sometimes this has the opposite effect.

Cats have unique dietary requirements. They've evolved from their strictly carnivorous beginnings when the consumption of meat proteins was their staple diet. The modern "house cat" can thrive on a variety of diets. Some pet nutritionists believe cats do not necessarily require an ultra-high protein diet, but cats do have higher requirements for amino acids from dietary protein than dogs. Cats are obligate carnivores, so they must eat meat! When formulating diets for cats there should be a high amount of protein. In addition, special attention should be paid to a few key ingredients that must be included to maintain optimal health. These unique nutritional requirements are taurine, arginine, vitamin A, vitamin D, niacin, and arachidonic acid (Dr. Jennifer Adolphe & Alexandra Rankovic, April 20, 2018).

Finicky Eaters

Why do cats become so picky when eating? Cats are sensitive to the size, shape, texture, and the feel of food in their mouths. Pet nutritionists believe you should feed a wide variety of recipes to cats early in their development. Some people find a flavor their cats like and tend to feed the same food from the beginning every day. What happens if the company reformulates the recipe or the flavor/texture is discontinued. This happened to me with my previous Persian. She was so finicky and I found a food she would eat and the company discontinued what she was eating. It took me months to find a recipe/brand she would eat. I've fed Truffle and Brulee different food since they became adults to avoid this situation. Veterinarians and cat experts recommend you feed your feline a variety to help avoid the development of a finicky cat. You can rectify this situation by adjusting how you feed your cat(s). However, if your cat ever stops eating, you should get her to the vet. Cats will stop eating if they are ill and it doesn't take long for them to go into fatty liver failure if they don't eat.

Truffle and Brulee eat food with protein as the main ingredient and I try to vary the type of protein and the texture of the food. They eat pate, minced, and shredded wet food. Brulee prefers food that has some "gravy" in it. Truffle is on a more limited diet with her recent bladder stone surgery, but I allow her some high-quality food once or twice a week along with her prescription diet. It's important that Truffle eat wet food to insure she is getting additional hydration that helps promote the formation of urine with a low or acidic pH.

I always try to feed Truffle and Brulee the highest quality cat food I can find (that they will eat). I'm determined to keep them as healthy as possible with commercially prepared cat food. Brulee is very finicky and likes food she can pick up with her tongue (brachycephalic-faced Persian). Truffle loves almost any type of cat food, but is restricted to mostly prescription food with her recent bladder stones. I did talk to the vet about feeding Truffle and variety of protein-rich wet food to accompany her kibble and so far it's working.

I had the opportunity to talk with representatives from Petcurean at Global Pet Expo. I'd seen Petcurean products in a local "whole food" pet store, but hadn't tried it yet. I was sent some of their Go!™ cat food this year and the girls loved it. The representatives wanted me to try some of the NOW FRESH® wet food recipes for our Catmas Wishes holiday series and I was more than willing to try it with the girls.

Truffle and Brulee loved the minced chicken and the chicken pate recipes. They ate the meat from the stews, but tended to leave the vegetables. I was pleased to see that most of the food was eaten with very little left in their bowls (like other brands and recipes). This is a brand of food that I'll continue to feed the girls and look forward to trying additional recipes from the Petcurean brand.

You can use the authorized retailers' link to find the closest location of stores that carry the Petcurean brand. I was happy to find three retailers between 4 and 17 miles from my home. One of the retailers is where I purchase my gluten-free food for my Celiac Disease. You can also find online retailers by using the same link. The Petcurean NOW FRESH® recipes are available in cases of 24 containers and cost $80+ per case, depending on where you purchase the food. Individual cartons may be purchased for $2.99 each. I highly recommend using this option so you can see which recipe your cat prefers.
