Redefining How You Groom Your Cat: HandsOn™ Glove

It's shedding season again and everyone who lives with a furry companion knows what this means...

In our home, this time of the year usually means "cotton ball fields" in our hallway because we shed so much. We're Silver Shaded Persian Cats and we shed moderately year-round, but we "blow" our coat twice a year. This means we shed our entire coat practically all at once, which leaves more hair than humans believed was possible.

Persian cats need to be groomed daily and there are several tools that are effective. Most groomers and breeders recommend using a "greyhound-style" comb, a bristle brush, and a slicker brush to groom Persian Cats. The length and density of your cat's (or dog's) fur will depend on which type of grooming tool you choose to use. I find I need to use the greyhound comb in order to get down to the undercoat of my Persian cats in order to work out any tangles that may be forming. I find a brush doesn't really help with my Persian cats because it only touches the surface of their fur and I end up with fur flying all over the room. The slicker brush is nice to get their bellies and under their necks and arms, but some slicker brushes tend to have sharp points which irritate my sensitive-skinned Persian cats. I needed to find something for the daily grooming in order to get rid of excess fur and to "fluff up" their coats.

Brulee investigating the HandsOn® Gloves

HandsOn® Gloves

I had the privilege of meeting Jay Michaelson, the founder and CEO of HandsOn® Gloves at Global Pet Expo this year. We talked about the challenges of grooming Persian Cats and he was excited to share videos of the gloves in action and success stories. I was a little skeptical because I know the lack of success with brushes and other "glove-type" brushes with my cats. He provided me with a pair of glove (correct size and chosen color) to bring home to try out with my Persian Cats.

What are HandsOn® Gloves?

HandsOn believes their gloves are a revolutionary concept that reaches far beyond the traditional curry combs, mitts, and shedders on the market today. The gloves won't slip off your hands, wet or dry, and provide your pets and you a more thorough and enjoyable bathing and grooming experience. The scrubbing nodules on the fingers and palms of the glove provide a deep thorough clean and are effective de-shedders. An added benefit of the gloves is that fur doesn't stick to the HandsOn Glove. The textured surface and flexibility of the HandsOn Gloves allow one to better massage and improve your pet's circulation while distributing natural oils and promoting a healthy skin and coat.

The HandsOn® Gloves are available in sizes junior, small, medium, large, and X-large. They are available in purple, green, and black. You can purchase the Gloves on the HandsOn website or other online stores such as Amazon.

Truffle relaxing while being groomed with the HandsOn® Gloves

Our Review

I must say the fit is incredible. I have small hands with short fingers and most gloves do not stay on my hands or I have difficulty picking up things because of the excess material at the end of the fingertips. I was curious how the girls would react to the gloves once they were on my hands.

I first placed the gloves on the bed so the girls could get used to the size and smell of them. Cats tend to be hesitant about new things. I then placed the gloves on one hand so the girls could smell my scent through the gloves. Brulee was a little hesitant about the gloves, but Truffle was secure enough to allow me to hold her with the gloves on my hand. I began slowly by stroking Truffle on her back and moving towards her head. She was very comfortable while I was doing this. It took a little longer for her to allow me to stroke her with the gloves under her chin, on her neck and belly. The result was the successful removal of a lot of loose fur while she was getting a gentle massage. Brulee is still a little hesitant about the grooming glove, but she is hesitant with anything new.

The fur was easy to remove from the glove after a grooming session

I believe I will still need to use a greyhound-style comb to get down to the skin because of their dense coat in order to get rid of tangles and small mats in addition to the HandsOn Glove. I like the idea of using the glove first to remove loose fur, then use the comb and slicker brush (for the belly and underarms), and then finish with the HandsOn glove. I can imagine this glove would be an excellent grooming tool for people with shorter-haired cats, dog, and horses.

HandsOn recommends using these gloves when bathing your furry companions, too. Truffle and Brulee rarely get baths but I can imagine using these gloves for the occasional "butt bath" they get. The gloves will keep my hands and fingernails clean while the flexible grip will allow me to handle the spray hose and cats.

I'm sharing a short video below showing a "moment of love" between Truffle and me as I was using the HandsOn glove to groom her. She was curious, yet relaxed. I'm still working on Brulee, but she doesn't usually enjoy grooming so it may take a little longer with her.

  1. I wonder if this would work on Binga? She's the one that hates grooming! My human has two Greyhound combs for me, and a slicker to fluff my tail. Plus I get two shampoos, a leave-in conditioner and a bunch of other stuff!

    1. If Binga likes to be rubbed and petted, she should love this grooming glove.

  2. Laila is obsessed with being groomed so know she would love this! I use a steel tooth comb and slicker brush.

  3. I use a greyhound comb as well. It really gets all the way down and works the tangoes out. Davinia hated slicker brushes her coat was not as dense and it would rub against her. Indiana was most comfortable with a soft brush but of course it didn’t get the tangles on her ears or her rear legs. I would love to try the Hands On Glove as a daily grooming tool with the occasional use of the greyhound comb for ears and other potential problem areas. Would love to hear how this works for their occasional sanitary baths.

  5. Hmmm I wonder if those would do anything for Treeno. He loathes being groomed (my groomers heart is sad) but he’s got a crazy wegie coat and molts twice a year. I hate that he gets matted and I have clipper off matts

  6. That was a nice and thorough review, thanks! Truffle was a good spokescat, although that tail got thrashing at the end - MOL!

    1. Truffle tends to wag her tail like a dog! I can always tell she's irritated when her ears go back and she growls. She doesn't get irritated too easily.

  8. What an amazing glove. Something like this would be great for anyone who hates a brush but loves a stroke!

  11. This glove is amazing. Right now I use a brush with mirror for my cat Daisy Mae. She sheds a lot. Love to try this glove. It might relax her more. I hope I win.

  12. Great giveaway! We entered as I'd love to try a product like this on Fenrir, my Alaskan Klee Kai. He's small, just 12 lbs, but Alaskan Klee Kai basically have the same type of fur as a husky. That means LOTS of shedding pretty much year round, but Fen does blow his coat a few times a year as well. I'm not sure a product like this would replace all the brushes in my arsenal but I bet my dogs would enjoy it.

  14. I am sitting here wondering how Layla would react as she hates anything rubber. I brush her daily to keep tangles out of her fur. Thanks for sharing this review.

  15. That is nice you found some comfortable grooming gloves to brush your cats. I like the idea of having a grooming glove that can also be used in the bath. I do use one that is just for the bath on my dogs.

  16. Ooh, yeah! I got one similar to this; it is fantastic. Cookie loves it, I love it. I'd like an "enhanced" hand.

  17. Yay, Canada!!! I need these for Ricky. We were just at the vet's for vaccinations, yesterday, and the vet commented on the amount of shed. Long haired cats - wow! I feel like I vacuum non stop. These grooming gloves look amazing. Entering and sharing!

  18. I also have small hands, so I'm glad to know that they fit you. Nelly doesn't shed, but Theo and Sophie do. I think both of them wouldn't mind these gloves.

  19. This looks a LOT better than some of the brushes they do for cats. Running your hands down a cats body makes them feel good. This such a great giveaway!

  20. Oh, how relaxing is that video? Quality relaxing, massaging time ~and~ deshedding? How wonderful! Think this would work on Huskies?! They would love this a million times more than the groomer and his brushes! Great review!
