Feline Safety and Comfort in Winter

Winter can be a beautiful time of the year with the holidays and snowfall. However, these events can be a stressful and dangerous time of the year for our feline companions. Even if your cat stays indoors, you should provide a safe place for your cat to feel comfortable for both the cold weather and the festivities of the holidays.

A Cat Tree That’s a Castle

Cats need places to climb to the top to survey their domain, to hide for escape for the environment, and to scratch. There are several types of furniture that provide these individual needs, but it's even better when a piece of furniture provides all of this in one piece!

Perfect Evening Meal and Dessert for Cats

Did you know cats are most active at dawn and dusk? This is one reason cats should be fed in the morning and evening. After a good meal, cats tend to sleep better too, so it's important to feed her something she will eat and that is good for her.

Truffle and Brulee are fed a variety of proteins and textures each day. One reason for this is to keep them from getting finicky and varying the protein (aka rotational diet) makes it easier to change food in the future, should your cat have a need for a special diet. I've also had issues in the past where a company changed the recipe for a product and my cat wouldn't eat it. I'm always searching for high-quality food that is good for my cats and that they will eat.

Enhance Your Living Space with Fresh Air

Staying at home and indoors this last year due to the pandemic has caused me to realize the air in my home isn't as pure as it should be. Sure, I change out the air filters twice a year, but there is so much dust and odor inside and it's terrible for both my cats and me. I have terrible allergies and Brulee (one of my cats) also tends to sneeze a lot. Perhaps, the use of an air purifier would help enhance my home with fresh air so both my cats and myself can breathe a little easier.

Finally a Place for Your Cat to Rest on Your Desk!

Working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic has been challenging in many ways. For the first time, many of us are experiencing the daily lives of our cats and seeing their daily routines. Cats tend to dislike having their routines changed, so having someone home 24-hours a day may be challenging for both your feline companion and you. One of the challenges is being able to work on your computer with a curious cat nearby because she always wants to rest on your keyboard or in front of the monitor.

Does My Cat Communicate with Me?

Can our cats communicate with us? There are studies about how cats communicate with their humans through body language. But, can cats communicate telepathically with humans to share feelings and thoughts about their environment and bodies? Communicating with your cats can help you get to know your feline's thoughts and as a result, develop a closer bond through understanding her needs. Working with a professional animal communicator may assist you with this communication.

A Visit From the Past

'Tis better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all."

- Alfred Tennyson

The quote above is from a poem from Alfred Tennyson and is about unexpectedly losing a loved one and the harrowing grief process that follows it.

Happy Birthday Brulee!

Can you believe Brulee is 9 years old today?

5Strands© Pet Intolerance Test Results

On the whole, Truffle and Brulee are very healthy cats. Once in a while, they will scratch more than usual or one of them may have a little upset stomach. Any time I've taken one of them to the vet, he always asks "have they eaten anything different lately?" and I'm not always sure of the answer because I rotate proteins and brands of food with the girls on a regular basis. I've always wondered if there was an easier way to narrow down the culprit to their temporary discomfort.

Recently we shared information about a Pet Intolerance Test developed from 5Strands® Affordable Testing. By combing a few strands of fur from my cats, I was able to obtain results of items in the environment and their food that may cause some temporary issues. The results were very informative and interesting.

Take Your Cat to the Vet - #Cat2Vet

August 22 is National Take Your Cat to the Vet Day. Did you know that 83% of cats visit the veterinarian before their 1st birthday, but over 50% don’t return until they become sick or are in pain?

It's important to take your cat to the vet on a regular basis. With regular veterinary visits, your veterinarian can often detect conditions that may affect your cat’s long-term health.

8 Tips for Keeping Cats Happy

Today is International Cat Day (aka World Cat Day). Cats should be celebrated everyday no matter where they live or who they are. This day is set aside to share our passion for cats and learn more about this captivating species. The day highlights the fact that there is no ‘one size fits all’ in cats. Just as there are cats that thrive as pets, others may never adapt to living alongside humans, no matter how much love we give them. Each cat is an individual and for International Cat Day, we want all cats to be happy cats.

The Touch of a Furry Paw

I've grown up with pets most of my life. My first pet was a beautiful Rough Collie named Tiny. We later had a Cocker Spaniel and two Pekingeses. I look back on the joys of sharing the first twenty years of my life with these wonderful canine companions. However, it wasn't until I experienced the soft touch of a cat's furry paw on my hand and face that I realized the comfort and peace one receives when sharing their home with a feline.

5 Strands Affordable Testing for Pets

Does your cat have an occasional upset stomach, diarrhea, or itchy skin? Many times these symptoms only last a short time with no need to visit a veterinarian. However, as a pet parent, you would like to discover what caused the temporary symptoms in your cat and avoid future instances. Was the cause an allergy that has long term effects or an intolerance that is temporary but reoccurring?

Preparing Your Cats for Noisy Fireworks

Life would be wonderful if we could enjoy everything in life, including the joys of watching the amazing fireworks on Independence Day (aka 4th of July). Unfortunately, our feline companions don't always like the loud booming sounds of fireworks and may become stressed and fearful.

The 5 Ps for Emergency Pet Preparedness

We live in South Carolina and during the last five years, we've experienced four hurricanes, an average of fourteen tornadoes per year (23 in one day in April 2020), earthquakes (average of 10-15 per year below magnitude 3, and a 1000-year flood in October 2015. Luckily, none of these events have directly effected us personally, but we need to be prepared with these type of statistics! Are you prepared for both your human family and furry companions in case of an emergency?

Even though the Summer Solstice hasn't arrived yet, the heat wave is already here, especially in the South where we live! We've already had nine days in May and early June with temperatures in the 90s. Have you ever wondered how cats with furry coats keep cool or how we, as humans, can help them maintain a comfortable temperature?

What is FVRCP?

We've shared many posts about the importance of taking your cats to the veterinarian at least once a year for wellness checkups. We even talked about the importance of vaccinations last year on our World Veterinary Day post. We'd like to share a little more detail about the most common vaccination - FVRCP. This vaccination helps prevent many viruses that may occur in felines.

Single Source Animal Protein: Merrick LID

Do you have a cat with a sensitive stomach and/or allergies? Has your vet ever told you that you should feed your cat more protein? Do you need a food that may support healthy digestion and provide other nutrients for health and happiness?

Catology

During this stressful time across the world, one thing we can always depend on is the love and comfort our feline companions bring us! We've read on the Internet that many people are beginning to consider bringing cats into their homes through fostering or adoption. As rewarding as this can be, it can also be a challenge for first-time fosters.

Visiting the Veterinarian With COVID-19 Restrictions

It's difficult enough taking your cat to the veterinarian for a normal routine (or illness) visit but when you need to take your cat to the vet during the COVID-19 scare and isolation, the stress level is compounded.

Truffle and Brulee have been very healthy this past year and only needed to go to the vet for wellness visits. This morning, I woke up to Truffle squinting and draining from her left eye.
