Hound & Gatos - Update!

We introduced a new cat food brand to our readers during our Catmas Wishes holiday series. We wanted to give everyone an update on how well we've done on the food for the past two months.

Wet Cat Food

Hound & Gatos® is a high-quality, high-protein diet for cats. This food focuses on animal protein-focused nutrition and boasts that their 13 canned recipes are formulated with 98% real meat, plus a precisely balanced vitamin-mineral mix. The food is completely grain-free and can be fed as a complete meal of mixed with kibble to enhance the flavor and nutrition.

Recipes of Hound & Gatos Canned Food for Cats

We talked about eating the delicious and healthy wet canned food in December. We're happy to report that both Truffle and Brulee LOVE this food. Even though it's a pate, the texture is different than other pate-type foods I've tried to feed them in the past. There is a large enough variety of protein recipes available to meet the needs of the finickiest of eaters. One of Truffle and Brulee's newest favorite protein is lamb. I'd never tried this with the girls, but both cleaned their plate. They've tried the chicken & liver, duck & liver, lamb & liver, rabbit, and gamebird poultry.

Here's a short little video of Truffle eating some of her rabbit recipe.

Dry Cat Food

Hound & Gatos released their dry food recipes in Fall 2019 for cats and dogs. The dry cat food recipes is available in three flavors: Wild Caught Salmon, Cage Free Turkey, and Cage Free Chicken. The dry cat food created by Hound & Gatos contains only a few key ingredients, starting with premium meat, poultry, or fish. There are no highly processed, rendered meals, such as chicken or fish in their dry food. Hound & Gatos never uses plant proteins like peas, chickpeas, or lentils in their dry recipes. They prepare their dry food with USA raised, cage-free chicken, and super-nutritious whole eggs.

We received a bag of the Cage Free Chicken Recipe Dry Food to review. This food is made of 87% protein from animal sources with added taurine for feline health. Vitamins and minerals are sourced from the US, Canada, and  Europe. The first two ingredients listed are deboned chicken and egg.

At first, I mixed the Hound & Gatos kibble with their regular dry kibble. Both Truffle and Brulee ate the kibble mixed in. The kibble pieces were a little larger than some of the "high-quality" dry food I've tried in the past. This meant Brulee could pick up the food easier and hold it in her mouth to eat. As I slowly worked the girls up to eating just the Hound & Gatos, I still kept one bowl out of the prescription dry food that Truffle eats to prevent bladder stones. The girls would nibble at the Hound & Gatos, but seemed to prefer their prescription food more. If Truffle's diet wasn't so limited, I'd try to feed just this food, but I want to maintain her urinary health and not chance any problems with not feeding the prescription food in some form.

I'd never heard of this brand prior to meeting the representatives at Global Pet Expo last year. However, since posting our original review in December, I've seen several people from Persian-breed specific Facebook groups talking about the high quality of this food.

To help you find Hound & Gatos products, there is a "find us" page on their webpage where you can type in your location to locate the closest retail store. When I typed in my address, the closest "physical" stores near me were 2 hours away. You can purchase Hound & Gatos products at online stores, such as Chewy.com, PetFlow, and Amazon. A case of 24 cans (5.5-oz) retails from $42.00 - $54.00 on Chewy.com. A case would last me a couple of months, because I split the can 4 ways to feed my cats because they don't eat a lot in one sitting. The dry food isn't easily available at this time, but I encourage you to try it with your cats as soon as it's in the stores.

  6. Although I don't have cats, I can certainly understand the struggle of finding the 'perfect' food for your pet! I'm glad Truffle and Brulee are enjoying, and doing well on, this brand! I think this is my first time hearing about the brand, I'll have to take a look at what they offer for dog foods.

  12. This sounds good food and it is really good that you can feed them it, almost as a treat meal, alongside the prescription kibble. It is so important to know the ingredients in our cat food right now - this sounds almost good enough for us to eat!

  13. We've heard of Hound and Gatos before now, but Mom hasn't yet bought any of the food. I told her I'd like to try it since Truffle and Brûlée seem to like it. I'm going to check and see if we can get it at our local stores and if so, I'm going to send Mom to the market to get me some. I want to sample the lamb and liver! It sounds NOM! Purrs.

  14. My cats are weird about more exotic proteins. Bear won't eat rabbit, lamb or duck. Ellie won't eat lamb - but I've never tried rabbit with her. Since this brand name doesn't start with W, Bear might actually eat this (I remember telling you he won't eat wet food from brand names starting with W - don't know if you remember that, thus the explanation) - though it's hit and miss with pate with him.
