Custom Pet Portraits

If you have a pet, you probably take lots of photos!!! I had to purchase an external hard drive to save all of the photos I've taken of Truffle and Brulee over the last 9 years. I've always wanted a portrait of the girls, but couldn't afford the price. There is now a solution to get a custom illustrated pet portrait that is reasonably priced and looks great.

We were contacted a few weeks ago by West & Willow to see if we were interested in collaborating on a product review of their custom illustrated pet portraits. Mom Paula went to the website to read about the process and to see what was available. The portraits are different from many she'd seen and she liked the simplicity of the look, so she said yes.

West & Willow

West & Willow is a "passionate and loving" pet portraits brand dedicated to creating modern portraits of pets. Their philosophy is to offer simple and clean designs with a few simple backgrounds and frame options that will easily blend into any home decor. West & Willow is based in New York City and ships to the US ($8.95), Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, and most European countries ($9.95). The only limitation is that they cannot ship "framed" portraits to Australia because of wood import regulations.

Pet portraits are available in the following formats:
  • Custom Pet Portraits (poster only) for single pet
  • Custom Pet Portraits (framed) for single pet
  • Custom Two-Pet Portraits (poster only)
  • Custom Two-Pet Portraits (framed)
  • iPhone Case

West & Willow Pet Portraits are hand-illustrated by their digital artists based on a photo that is provided by the individual.

How Does It Work?

Choosing a Photo

We decided to get a Custom Two-Pet Portrait because we wanted a portrait with both Truffle and Brulee included. The first step is to choose a photo! It's important to select a photo that is high-quality, preferable one that is taken in daylight or in a brightly lit room. Make sure you choose a photo where the whole face of your pet is visible and not in shadows. You should select a photo where your pet is looking directly at the camera eye level, facing forward. If you choose a photo where your pet is positioned differently, the portrait will reflect the same position. It also helps if your photo shows your pet's neck. The digital artists will remove any background from your photo. When you are selecting your photo and you can't determine which photo will work best, you can email the image to the support team, for assistance.

Personalizing Your Portrait

Once you've selected the photo you want used, it's time to personalize the portrait. You can include your pet's name on the final artwork (using West & Willow signature font). You can select the background of your portrait (dusty pink, soft white, charcoal gray), and choose either black or white frames.

The portraits from West & Willow are printed on museum-quality giclee Epson matte paper. This gives your artwork a polished and professional look. The semi-hardwood frames are matte finish and are made from renewable forests. The frame includes hanging hardware.

Time Frame for Custom Illustration

Most orders are shipped with 1-2 weeks after you complete the ordering process. The portrait comes in a padded box for protection.

Our Review

Brulee beside the custom portrait from West & Willow

In all honesty, the hardest part was selecting the appropriate photo. Truffle and Brulee don't go outside and there is very little natural light in our home. I thought I'd found two great photos to use, but I realized after I received the portrait that Truffle was looking to the side while Brulee was looking forward. The other problem I had was that there was so much shading in between the girls' fur, but they have so much fur that shading is inevitable. I started to use the charcoal gray background to offset the shading between their fur, but decided on the dusty pink because it would soften the portrait better and we use pink as our brand colors. I chose the black frame for the portrait.

The portrait was delivered within 2 weeks and I am very impressed with the results. If I were to do this again, I may select the individual portraits instead of the two-pet option. I do plan on getting a portrait done of my previous Persian Cat, Praline.

The results are great! I can't wait to find the perfect location in my home to mount the portrait.

  5. Wow. That is truly unique. I LOVE the shading. I just realized unique sounds like code for something - but what I mean is one-of-a-kind WONDERFUL! I have so many problems getting good pictures without shadows myself - we have 0 natural light because our unit is the equivalent of a walk out basement. I couldn't tell you had the same problem by your photography though. Since your girls are similar, I actually really like both of them on there. I don't know that I'd look to put Bear and Ellie on the same print though.

  12. I'd go with the Custom Pet Portraits (framed) but can't decide between the single pet or double. I have so many furbabies I'd love to have a portrait of (both ones with me and ones who have left for the Rainbow Bridge)

  13. How cool! We don’t have anything with bean and Yoda together so we’d probably go with what you got (framed 2 pet).
