Dr. Elsey's® - The Litter Cats (and Humans) Love™

Did you know that inappropriate elimination is the number one behavioral reason cats are abused and surrendered to shelters? There are numerous reasons for inappropriate elimination. The first step is to have your cat examined by a veterinarian to rule out any medical reasons. If there are no health conditions causing inappropriate elimination, you should consider the brand of cat litter you are using.

Past Experiences with Cat Litter

When Truffle and Brulee came to live with me nine years ago, I continued using the litter the breeder was using for all of her cats. Everything was great for a few years and the company changed the formula and things weren't going well for me (problems with the clumping, odor control, tracking, etc.). I tried a few of the litters on the market: wheat-based, corn-based, pellets, clumping, and non-clumping are just a few. I'd begun working with various companies for product reviews and many were willing to send cat litter to try. I was open to something new, so I agreed. I followed the recommended process of blending the new litter with the current litter so my cats would grow slowly accustomed to the different litter. I though I'd discovered a new litter for the girls because they were using it mixed with the old litter, so I decided to put the new litter by itself. For the first time ever, Truffle eliminated outside of the litter box. At first, I thought it was because I hadn't cleaned it quickly enough. The next day, she eliminated outside of the second litterbox with the new litter. The thought popped into my head that maybe she didn't like the new litter after all, so I cleaned out one of the boxes and put some of the old litter inside and Truffle immediately went inside and used the box. That experience taught me that the type of cat litter does matter to cats and I was on a mission to find a litter that worked for both my cats and me. I've tried automatic litter boxes with special litter, pellets that changed color depending on the pH of the urine, and various types of clumping litter, all with mixed results. A few years ago, I read about Dr. Elsey's Cat Litter on social media and decided to give it a try.

Dr. Elsey's® Cat Litter - the litter cats love™

Ultra Litter

The first cat litter I tried from Dr. Elsey's was the Ultra Litter. The Ultra Litter is the #1 selling litter from Dr. Elsey's. It's unscented and features hard clumps. This litter is known for having superior odor control and is ideal for multi-cat households. It can also be used with sifting and mechanical litter boxes. Both of my cats immediately used the Ultra Litter without mixing with a previous litter. The Ultra Litter is 99.9% dust free and I was pleased with less dust because I found out I was allergic to dust mites and Brulee tends to have some respiratory issues with her flatter face. I rarely smell the litter box and the clumps stay firm which makes it easy to remove without it breaking down. The odor control is so great that I sometimes forget to scoop the box because I don't smell anything.

Clean Tracks™ Litter

I recently had the opportunity to try out the Clean Tracks™ Litter from Dr. Elsey's. I was very interested in this litter because Truffle and Brulee are Persian Cats and they have a lot of fur on the bottom of their feet and on their legs and they tended to track litter out of the litter box. The Clean Tracks Litter is a low tracking, multiple cat strength, hard clumping, unscented litter with natural ingredients. This litter features a unique formulation of medium grain clay that helps keep litter in the box while controlling odor without added perfumes, deodorants, or chemicals. When I first received this litter, I did mix it with the Ultra Litter. My cats didn't appear to notice any difference, so I began putting the Clean Tracks Litter in one box and the Ultra Litter in the other box. The interesting thing I noticed is that my cats used the different litter boxes depending on whether they needed to urinate or defecate. I have noticed there is less litter making it's way out of the litter box on their furry paws. The Clean Tracks Litter is great with odor control and clumping.

Additional Dr. Elsey's Litters

Dr. Elsey's mission is to help keep cats in loving home by providing proven, veterinarian formulated solutions for cat litter. They have several additional formulas available, depending on the needs of your cat(s). I haven't tried these other litters, but with the success of the Ultra Litter and the Clean Tracks Litter, I'm confident I will use these other formulas should the need arise.

Cat Attract™ Litter. This litter is designed to encourage cats to use the litter box who are experiencing inappropriate urination. The Cat Attract Litter is blended with a natural herb attractant with an ideal texture and particle size to bring cats back to the litter box. Cat Attract Litter is a veterinarian-formulated litter that has been a proven solution for cat owners for over 15 years. Each bag of Cat Attract Litter has a free Litter Box Solutions Booklet to help cat owners solve litter box problems. Fortunately, I've never had the need for this type of litter, but I am constantly seeing people recommend this litter to people who are complaining that their cats are pooping or peeing outside of the litter box. I've also read numerous reviews from people who are extoling the success of this litter.

Ultra Scented Litter. The Ultra Scented Litter is 99.9% dust-free, low tracking, hard clumping, with superior odor control through a moisture activated scent. This scent has no perfumes and there is no scent until after your cat uses the litter. This litter is the same formulation of the Ultra Litter with heavy non-tracking granules and medium grain clay.

Touch of Outdoors™ Litter.  Touch of Outdoors Litter is a 99% dust-free, hard clumping clay that contains field grown prairie grasses and natural chlorophyll for continuous odor control. If you have a cat who likes to go outside or you want to enrich your cat's environment, you may consider this litter. Each box of this litter includes a free Litter Box Solutions Booklet to help cat owners solve litter box problems.

Paw Sensitive™ Litter. The Paw Sensitive Litter is designed for cats with sensitive paws and senior cats. It has a finer texture for a soft paw feel and is 99.9% dust-free and hard clumping with superior odor control.

Kitten Attract™ Litter. This litter is specifically designed for training kittens to use the litter box. This litter is the same premium litter with superior clumping ability and is ground to an ideal granule size and texture for a kitten's tender paws. Kitten Attract™ Litter contains a kitten-specific natural herbal attractant that piques a kitten's curiosity to use the litter box. Dr. Elsey recommends that you change from the Kitten Attract to Cat Attract litter after one year to ensure consistent litter box use. Each box of this litter includes a free Litter Box Solutions Booklet to help cat owners solve litter box problems. I've never had the need to use something like this because all of my cats came to me already using a litter box, but I've seen several people on social media recommending this litter, especially if you rescue a cat who isn't using the litter box yet.

R&R™ Respiratory Relief Clumping Clay Litter and R&R™ Respiratory Relief Silica Gel Litter. The R&R™ Respiratory Relief Litter is available in two formulas - silica gel and clumping clay. This litter is low-dust and hypoallergenic to help control respiratory disease in cats and is created with a formulation free from plant proteins, perfumes, or deodorants. The natural essences in the litter along with the low dust helps to reduce stress, which can be an important factor in controlling Feline Respiratory Disease.

Senior Litter. The Senior Litter formula is made of silica gel that traps urine and odor on contact which can help prevent urinary tract infections. It's biodegradable and non-toxic. The small particle size and dust fines also coat and dehydrate cat feces to help reduce odor. This litter is cleaner because is contains no organic material such as wheat, pine, corn, paper, or cedar. Each bag of this litter includes a free Litter Box Solutions Booklet to help cat owners solve litter box problems.

Long Haired (Soon to be renamed Crystal Litter) Litter. The Long Haired Litter traps urine and odor on contact and has the right particle size that long haired cats prefer. It is made of an amorphous silica gel infused with hydrolyzed herbs to draw cats to the litter box. It's low tracking and will not adhere to the cat's long fur or color the coat. Each bag contains a free Litter Box Solutions Booklet to help cat owners solve their litter box problems. I didn't realize Dr. Elsey's made this litter and it would be an ideal litter for my two Persian Cats who keep their full coat year-round. I'd definitely be interested in trying this to see if my cats would use it because they do get litter attached to their fur.

Classic Litter. The Classic Litter is the original litter from Dr. Elsey's. This litter is popular with cat owners who want a hard clumping, low tracking litter. The Classic Litter features a larger, denser particle that stays in the litter box better than fine grain litters. This litter clumps hard and will not break apart in the litter box. It's 99.9% dust-free, low tracking, all natural ingredients, hard-clumping, hypoallergenic, and has superior odor control.

Dr. Elsey's also has Ultra Litter Attractant™, Cat Attract™ Litter Additive, and Urine Removal Program with Aromatherapy to assist with getting cats back into the litter box.

Our Review

I've included my experiences about the Dr. Elsey's products I've used within the narrative above. I've used the Ultra Litter and the Clean Tracks™ Litter on a regular basis with my two cats with much success. Until I did research for this review, I had no idea there were so many formulas of cat litter available through Dr. Elsey's that can meet the needs of any situations with your cats in your home. I would be interested in trying the Touch of Outdoors™ and the Long Haired Litter with my two Persian Cats.

I've found both the Ultra Litter and the Clean Tracks™ litter to be great for odor control and for clumping. The litter isn't lightweight, but it's effective! I was tired of litters where the clumps would break apart when I was scooping and where there was little odor control. This litter is one that works for both my two cats and me.

Dr. Elsey's also makes cat food! I reviewed this food last year and both of my cats love this food, even my finicky Brulee!

I can honestly say that I support these products from Dr. Elsey's 100% and will continue to purchase them for my cats.

  1. Clean Track Litter would be the best for my Cat. Why? Because she does track litter on her paws which in turn gets on the floor and I hate to say it but yes eventually on my feet by me or one of my family tramping on it and it it hurts if you step on it.
I look forward to trying this litter if I win and hope I do.

  2. They do make good litter. We used it for a while and liked it, we just had a hard time getting it. Petsmart was always out of the one we wanted when we needed it and Chewy couldn't deliver it without it bursting open in the shipping box.

  3. I love their litter, I just can't afford it with all my cats.

  4. It sounds like good litter, with lots of interesting choices, but we've never tried it.

  5. Wow! Sounds like great litter. We have difficulty getting the preferred litter way out here in the middle of nowhere. I tend to buy LOADS of boxes a few times a year. Right now we are not having any litter box issues, but when stressed, Kozmo is out major perpetrator. It is his way of letting me know he is not a happy camper.

  6. Dr. Elsey's are litter experts!

  7. We use the cat attract mixed with the classic, but we are very interested in the long hair litter because both Gemini and Ichiro periodically suffer from klingons!

  8. Ultra Litter would be good because it hard clumps and can be used in mechanical litter boxes

  9. I’ve used the crystal stuff in the show hall because it would keep dust off my black Persian. Turns out Plush hates the stuff. It’s pretty sharp. I used it at home in one box and I have to say I’m not a fan. It doesn’t clump, it’s like the gel stuff in diapers, it absorbs the pee. Which is great for the first few days but then it starts to stink. And when it’s done it’s very done and turns into a puddle. I’m not a fan. I am a fan of Dr Elsy’s as a company though. Cat attract has solved litter problems for lots of people. They are a show sponsor too.

  10. I love the cat attract litter. One of my cats pees outside the box sometimes so I like this type to help him use the box better

  11. We love the Ultra Scented. With 8 cats it's tough to get a good clumping litter that contains the smell. This does a great job!

  12. I love the Clean Tracks. I have a nice new clean box to put it in too. Thanks!

  13. The Ultra. I actually have this litter in my litter box right now. It's unscented and does the job well.

  14. i think the clean tracks. i dont have cats but Safe Haven for Cats could really use this, i donated abt 6 bags of litter a few weeks ago. thank you.

  15. I would pick the regular Ultra variety for my boys. They don't have any litter box issues so a basic litter is perfect.

  16. Ultra would be best for my cats because they are heavy box users!

  17. i would love the Classic Litter because my cats track litter everywhere!

  18. Dr. Elsey's® Ultra Cat Litter with superior odor control.

  19. I cannot believe how things have changed since I had cats over 20 years ago and wish in those days that had such great litter, these sound amazing and happy you have found a solution
